ALDS travel will test A's in Game 3

OAKLAND -- Upon conclusion of Game 2 of the American League Division Series at the Coliseum on Saturday night, the A's and Tigers are in for a wacky schedule.

Both teams will board charter flights to Detroit immediately after the game and are slated to land in the Motor City shortly after 6 a.m. ET, if all goes according to plan. Then they'll sleep during the day, as much as they can anyway, rather than work out.

Their body clocks will be in for another surprise come Monday with a matinee on tap, airing on MLB Network at 10 a.m. PT.

"It's an interesting turnaround, one that's unique," said A's manager Bob Melvin on Saturday afternoon. "But there's not a problem with adrenaline postseason."

The A's typically don't hit on the field before day games, but Melvin noted "this is one where we do have to hit on the field to get used to the conditions."

Oakland's skipper isn't too worried these days about getting enough shut-eye.

"You sleep in the offseason," he said, smiling -- and believes he probably couldn't even if allowed.

"Sometimes you just can't sleep," said Melvin, who was up past 2 a.m. PT following Friday's loss.

"Especially after a loss, I won't watch any baseball stuff," he continued. "I'll watch TV and won't even know what I'm watching. I could watch TV for an hour and if you asked me what I was watching I couldn't tell you. Usually it's 'Friends' or 'Seinfeld,' mindless stuff like that. I do enjoy watching that stuff."
