TORONTO -- Alex Anthopoulos is officially moving on. The former Blue Jays general manager was hired to become the Dodgers' vice president of baseball operations Tuesday afternoon.
Anthopoulos joins a crowded but experienced front office in Los Angeles that contains seven executives who have experience as a Major League general manager. According to a club release, Anthopoulos will assist in all aspects of baseball operations, working with president Andrew Friedman, GM Farhan Zaidi and senior VP of baseball operations Josh Byrnes.
The hiring had been expected since news first broke last week. Anthopoulos had been searching for a job after he declined to sign a contract extension in Toronto at the end of the season, citing that the organization was no longer the right fit.
"We are thrilled to be bringing Alex on board," Friedman said. "Farhan, Josh and myself all have longstanding relationships with him and believe his experience and perspective will be a tremendous asset to our organization."
Anthopoulos spent six years as Toronto's general manager and was recently named The Sporting News Executive of the Year for his role as the architect of the 2015 American League East champion team. He joins a Dodgers organization that won the National League West and has the highest payroll in the Major Leagues.
In addition to Friedman, Zaidi, Byrnes and Anthopoulos, members of the Dodgers organization who have served as a general manager are Tom Lasorda, Ned Colletti and Gerry Hunsicker.
