Reyes strikes out career-high 13 for Palm Beach

Cardinals No. 3 prospect Alex Reyes struck out a career-high 13 batters on Wednesday, an unsurprising total when you take a look at the radar gun.

According to FanGraphs' Kiley McDaniel, the right-hander hit 101 mph three separate times. The velocity couldn't help Reyes pick up a win -- Class A Advanced Palm Beach fell to Dunedin, 5-1 -- but it did help him strike out 13 hitters in just five innings of work. The 20-year-old allowed five hits, a walk and two earned runs in that span and has still not given up more than three earned in a start since Opening Day on April 9.

Few have vanquished opposing lineups with Reyes' consistency. Reyes, who signed with St. Louis in 2012, fanned 137 batters in 109 1/3 innings for Class A Peoria last season and has already struck out 90 in 59 2/3 innings this year, good for second in the Minor Leagues. Reyes trails Dodgers No. 4 prospect Jose De Leon, who has 96 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings. Reyes' total includes four double-digit days and 10 games of six or more strikeouts.

Wins haven't come as easily, though. After the loss Wednesday, Reyes sits at 2-5 with a 2.08 ERA in 12 starts.
