Jackie Bradley Jr. has joined the American League outfield leaders in the ongoing 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot voting to put Boston on course to have three starters at next month's 87th All-Star Game presented by MasterCard. And keep a close eye on fellow Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts as a key gainer in the latest weekly update.
National League leaders will be announced on Wednesday.
Bradley is in position to start along with designated hitter David Ortiz (1,460,339 votes) and shortstop Xander Bogaerts (1,040,465). The rest of the AL leaders announced on Tuesday include catcher and overall AL vote leader Salvador Perez of the Royals (1,605,922), first baseman Eric Hosmer of the Royals (1,272,557), second baseman Jose Altuve of the Astros (893,332), third baseman Manny Machado of the Orioles (898,715) and outfielders Mike Trout of the Angels (1,344,578) and Lorenzo Cain of the Royals (944,362).
Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on their computers, tablets and smartphones -- exclusively online using the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot until Thursday, June 30, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Bradley, vying for his first career All-Star selection, has received 937,571 votes to bump ahead of Baltimore's Mark Trumbo (816,276) for the third spot among outfielders. Betts, meanwhile, leapfrogged Alex Gordon of the Royals for sixth place, and the 312,969 votes he added over the past week is about twice as much earned in that time by Trumbo (fourth) and Jose Bautista of Toronto (fifth).
Not only is Bradley in line to start, but he also is closing the gap fast on Cain for the No. 2 outfield spot. He trailed Cain by 92,452 votes in last week's update, and now that lead is only 6,791. Can the Royals center fielder hold off both Boston outfielders, especially with the defending champions scuffling and the red-hot Indians leading the AL Central? The last Red Sox fan-elected outfielder starter was Jason Bay in 2009, and the last time Boston had three fan-elected starters was 2008, when the game was played at old Yankee Stadium.
Although Perez is widening his overall lead behind the plate, Matt Wieters of the Orioles made a big jump to leapfrog the Yankees' Brian McCann for second place.
Seattle's Robinson Cano, a six-time All-Star, is still in third place at second base but has narrowed the margin between him and Kansas City's Omar Infante from 121,790 last week to 86,133 this week. Cano, left off the All-Star roster last year for the first time since '09, is projected to hit .286 with 30 homers and 106 RBIs at his current pace.
Machado nearly tripled his lead over Moustakas, who is out for the season with a knee injury, in the race at third base, and Bogaerts roughly quadrupled his lead over Kansas City's Alcides Escobar at short. Detroit's Ian Kinsler and Texas' Elvis Andrus broke into the top five at second and short, respectively.
