Simmons collects 6th Fielding Bible Award

Angels SS ties Yadi for most honors; Richards among free agents

Angels shortstop added yet another defensive accolade to his extensive collection on Monday, winning his sixth consecutive Fielding Bible Award, which honors the top defender at each position regardless of league.
Simmons' six Fielding Bible Awards are tied with Cardinals catcher for the most in the award's history. No other player has won more than four in a row. Baseball Info Solutions determines the winners by polling a panel of 12 baseball experts, who rank the top 10 players at each position. Simmons garnered 119 points, one shy of a perfect score and 15 more than the D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed, who finished second with 104 points.
Simmons' 21 Defensive Runs Saved were tied with Ahmed for the most among MLB shortstops in 2018. The 29-year-old native of Curacao has compiled 184 career DRS, the second-highest total since the stat was introduced in 2003.

Simmons will have a chance to add to his trophy haul on Sunday, when the Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners will be announced at 5 p.m. PT on ESPN. Simmons, center fielder and right fielder were named finalists for the honor last week.
Angels claim Smith
The Angels enhanced their catching depth by claiming off waivers from the White Sox on Friday. To clear a spot for Smith on the 40-man roster, catcher was designated for assignment.
Smith, 30, batted .292 with a .728 OPS, three home runs and 21 RBIs in 52 games for the White Sox this past season. He will join rookies and as potential catching options for the Angels in 2019, though the club could also look for more external upgrades this offseason.
Six Angels hit free agency
The end of the World Series marks the beginning of the Hot Stove season around MLB, as 145 players officially became free agents on Monday. Six Angels were among them: right-handers Jim Johnson, , and , along with outfielders Chris Young and None are expected to receive qualifying offers this year. Players are eligible to sign with new teams after the qualifying-offer deadline on Friday at 2 p.m. PT.

Fall Stars
Second baseman Jahmai Jone and right-hander Brett Hanewich have been selected to represent the Angels in the Arizona Fall League's Fall Stars Game on Saturday. Jones, 21, is batting .357 with a .960 OPS, one home run, three doubles, seven RBIs and three stolen bases in 11 games with the Mesa Solar Sox. Hanewich, 23, has logged a 3.86 ERA over seven innings in six relief appearances.
