BALTIMORE -- The Orioles placed Andrew Cashner on the 10-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his neck on Wednesday, and recalled righty Yefry Ramirez to take his place on the roster.
"I know he's had it in the past, something he gets a real good return from," manager Buck Showalter said of the trigger-point injection Cashner had in his neck on Wednesday. "There's a lot of things guys do right before the [All-Star] break -- some guys get injections, different stuff, shoulders, pretty common. Hopefully he will respond well to that. We expect that to be good, and he'll finish the rest of the year."
Ramirez is a candidate to start on Sunday in Cashner's place, as is righty Jimmy Yacabonis, who was the 26th man on the roster for Monday's doubleheader. Ramirez, who started one of Monday's games, was optioned to Triple-A prior to Tuesday's game, but Cashner going on the DL negates the minimum 10-day stay in the Minors following an option.
Chris Tillman's final rehab start is also scheduled for Sunday; Showalter didn't rule him out to come up, though Yacabonis and Ramirez are two of the more likely options. Tillman allowed six runs over 6 1/3 innings for Class A Frederick on Tuesday and is slated to pitch for Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday. The team must make a decision after that, as his 30 days of rehab will be up.
"He was more consistent with his velocity than any [other] time," Showalter said of the reports he got of Tillman, who sat in the 88-91 mph range with his fastball. "Couple of throwing errors by him didn't help his cause. Had a tough inning or two, but was good the last two or three innings."
