Cutch, Pirates need an All-Star ballot boost

June 16th, 2016

NEW YORK -- The Pirates don't have any players leading their respective positions in the latest National League All-Star balloting update released Wednesday, but they have several in the mix.
Center fielder Andrew McCutchen holds perhaps the best odds of Pittsburgh landing an All-Star starter, as he's received 557,531 votes, the seventh most for outfielders in the league. He sits behind the Cubs' Jorge Soler (678,395 votes), Ryan Braun of the Brewers (845,093) and the Cubs' Jason Heyward (993,073), all of whom are chasing the Mets' Yoenis Cespedes (1,395,577 votes) for the third outfield spot.
McCutchen, who hit third against the Mets on Wednesday after spending much of the season in the No. 2 hole, is in the middle of a down year. A career .294 hitter, he was hitting .237/.317/.402 entering Wednesday.
He's not Pittsburgh's only shot at representation in the Midsummer Classic, though. First baseman John Jaso is in fifth with 276,254 votes and second baseman Josh Harrison is also in fifth, with 309,085 votes.
In addition, Starling Marte's 481,887 votes are ninth most for outfielders and Gregory Polanco checks in at 14th with 332,250 votes.
