ANAHEIM -- The Rangers lost a critical replay challenge in the fourth inning on Saturday, preventing Elvis Andrus from scoring a run that would have given them a 3-1 lead in what became a 4-1 win over the Angels.
The play occurred with two outs in the fourth with Andrus on first. Ryan Rua doubled into the left-center gap and Andrus tried to score. But shortstop Andrelton Simmons made a strong relay throw and Andrus was out at the plate as he tried to slide in head-first around the tag of catcher Carlos Perez. Andrus' left hand seemed to get blocked off the plate by Perez's left foot.
The Rangers appealed and lost the challenge. The official ruling from New York stated:
"After viewing all relevant angles the Replay Official definitively determined that there was no violation by the Catcher of the HP Collision Rule. Additionally the Replay Official could not definitively determine that the runner's hand touched HP prior to the Catcher applying the tag. The call on the field STANDS, the runner is out at HP."
