Pagan returns to workouts; Scutaro improving

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Center fielder Angel Pagan, who was scratched from Sunday's workout with back discomfort, resumed participating in drills Monday.

"I thought he would be [recovered]," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Bochy announced that Marco Scutaro (back) won't play in Wednesday's Cactus League opener against Oakland but added that the second baseman could be fit enough to appear in games by the end of the week. Scutaro has been throwing and recently began swinging a bat.

Catcher Buster Posey also will be out of Wednesday's lineup, though he's uninjured. Bochy simply wants to regulate Posey's activity before the regular season starts.
