Angels acquire outfielder David Murphy from Cleveland

ANAHEIM, CA -- The Angels Tuesday acquired OF David Murphy and cash considerations from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for minor league infielder Eric Stamets. Today's announcement was made by General Manager Bill Stoneman.

Murphy, 33, is currently in his 10th Major League season and was in his second campaign with the Indians. This season, he is batting .296 (61/206) with 22 runs, 12 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 27 RBI in 84 games with Cleveland, including a .344 OBP and .781 OPS. His best season came in 2012 when he posted a .304 clip (139/457), 65 runs, 29 doubles, three triples, 15 HR and 61 RBI. Murphy also posted a .380 OBP during the 2012 campaign.

The Houston, TX native has appeared in the Majors with the Red Sox (2006-07), Rangers (2007-13) and Indians (2014-15). He owns a lifetime slash line of .274/.335/.433 across 1,062 games. He appeared in the postseason in three consecutive seasons with the Rangers (2010-12), reaching the World Series in consecutive campaigns (2010-11). During his last trip to the Fall Classic, he batted .317/.429/.439. In 27 career playoff games, Murphy has hit .257 (18/70) with 11 runs, six extra-base hits and six RBI.

Stamets, 23, was originally drafted by the Angels in sixth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Evansville (IN). In 62 games with Double-A Arkansas this season, is batting .248 (53/214) with 13 doubles, three home runs and 23 RBI. In his four seasons in the Angels minor league system, he owns a career .262 average (344/1312) with 67 doubles, 12 home runs and 119 RBI.

To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Vinnie Pestano has been designated for assignment.
