Heaney scratched from start with illness

Angels don't expect to alter pitching plans; Wilson making progress

March 5th, 2016

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Angels right-hander Andrew Heaney was scratched from his start against the Mariners on Saturday afternoon, a 9-7 victory over Seattle, because of an undisclosed illness.
Manager Mike Scioscia said Heaney's start won't be rescheduled. The Angels will simply continue with their current pitching plans, and Heaney will go through his workouts as though he had made the start. (No. 3 prospectNate Smith got the ball in Heaney's place.)
Scioscia was quick to note that it's early enough in camp not to worry about Heaney's preparation for the season.

"There's plenty of room in the schedule for him to get where he needs to be," Scioscia said.
Heaney is coming off an impressive rookie campaign, during which he went 6-4 with a 3.49 ERA in 18 starts. Given the news that C.J. Wilson and Tyler Skaggs will probably begin the season on the disabled list, he's a safe bet to earn a rotation spot out of camp.
Wilson, meanwhile, isn't expected to miss much time during the regular season. He played catch for the first time in 12 days on Friday and a day later, Scioscia said he was impressed with the progress.
"He got back to 120 feet -- that's a good workout for him, and it's good to be able to see him get that extension," Scioscia said.
Regarding his Opening Day status, Wilson isn't too concerned. He says he's happy to miss a couple of starts early in the year, if it means he ends up making 30 quality starts down the road.
"No one cares how hard you try, they care if you do well," Wilson said. "If you aren't in the physical position to do well, you might as well let somebody else go [for a couple starts]."
Wilson experienced left-shoulder soreness during one of his first bullpen sessions of the spring, and an MRI revealed mild tendinitis. He's still more than a week from returning to a mound.
