ANAHEIM -- The Angels' struggling offense finally came to life Wednesday night and used a three-run second and a four-run seventh to fuel an 8-5 win and clinch a series victory against the A's at Angel Stadium.
The Halos entered Wednesday batting just .195 over their last 14 games, but they broke out for 14 hits and received offensive contributions from their entire lineup, with Cameron Maybin, Kole Calhoun, Jose Pujols and Jefry Marte all delivering multi-hit efforts. They have now won three consecutive games, improving to 11-12.
"I'm a big part of this offense getting rolling, and it was a big night for me," said Maybin, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. "I've been feeling good the last six or seven days with nothing to show for it, but tonight it was nice."
Yonder Alonso and Matt Joyce homered for the A's, who also saw left-hander Sean Manaea exit after just two innings with left shoulder tightness. Manaea allowed three runs on four hits and threw 34 pitches in the abbreviated outing. He is considered day to day.
Angels right-hander Matthew Shoemaker needed 100 pitches to get through five innings, but he rebounded from a 31-pitch first and earned his first victory of the season after allowing two runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out six. Shoemaker fell into trouble in the first after surrendering a single to Jed Lowrie and a walk to Khris Davis. Alonso later hit a two-run single to give Oakland a 2-0 lead, finishing with three RBIs.

"He's been real consistent, there's no doubt about it," A"s manager Bob Melvin said of Alonso, who already has four homers after totaling seven all of last year. "Using the whole field, certainly showing some power. He's taking every at-bat seriously, and I think each year he's really starting to understand who he is as a hitter. He's off to a good start for sure."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Angels' clutch hitting in the second: After falling into an early 2-0 hole, the Angels strung together three consecutive RBI hits with two outs in the second and emerged with a 3-2 lead. Danny Espinosa put the Angels on the board with an RBI double and tied the game after scoring on Maybin's single up the middle. Martin Maldonado followed by doubling into the right-center-field gap, plating Maybin from first and giving the Halos their first lead of the night.
"We got some two-out hits," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I think guys got into a comfort zone tonight. Cam Maybin with a big hit, Kole Calhoun another two-out hit. We were aggressive, ran the bases well and pressured those guys."

Halos break it open in the seventh: The Angels saw their two-run lead shrink to one following Alonso's leadoff home run off Yusmeiro Petit in the sixth, but they built a five-run cushion by erupting for four runs in the seventh. After loading the bases with one out against Ryan Dull, Maybin came through with a two-run single to right field, putting the Halos ahead, 6-3. Dull then fielded a bunt from Maldonado and flipped to catcher Stephen Vogt to try to get the forceout at home, but Espinosa's slide knocked the ball out of Vogt's glove, resulting in another run for the Angels. Calhoun capped the outburst with an RBI single to left.

Pujols collected his 1,834th career RBI after driving in Michael Trout in the fifth and surpassed Dave Winfield for sole possession of 17th place on the all-time list. Pujols is now one shy of tying Rafael Palmeiro for 16th place and two shy of matching Ken Griffey Jr. for 15th. More >

Athletics: Right-hander Kendall Graveman makes his return from the disabled list Thursday for a 7:05 p.m. PT series-finale start against the host Angels. Graveman was 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts before hitting the DL with a minor shoulder strain.
Angels: Right-hander Ricky Nolasco (1-2, 4.76 ERA) will take the mound on Thursday as the Angels close out their three-game series with the A's at 7:05 p.m. PT at Angel Stadium. Nolasco was originally slated to pitch Monday against the Blue Jays, but his start was pushed back to give him more time to fix a mechanical issue.
