Angels call up top prospect Gott from Triple-A

ANAHEIM -- Late Friday night, young right-hander Trevor Gott was informed by Triple-A Salt Lake manager Dave Anderson that he was getting his first call-up to the Major Leagues. So, Gott did what you'd expect. He informed his parents and his former coaches at the University of Kentucky. And by the time he boarded a flight, checked into his hotel and got some rest, news of his call-up had spread throughout Lexington.

"Next thing I knew, everyone knew and it was just blowing up," Gott said from the Angels' clubhouse on Saturday afternoon. "I assume it was my college coach who told somebody, and then it got blown up. What woke me up was my phone this morning, at like 5 a.m., because they're three hours ahead. My phone was just blowing it up. It's just crazy."

Gott was a sixth-round pick by the Padres just two years ago, then came to the Angels alongside Huston Street last July in a deal that saw the Angels send four prospects -- Taylor Lindsey, Elliot Morris, Jose Rondon and R.J. Alvarez -- to San Diego.

The 22-year-old Gott finished the 2014 season with a 1.56 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and a 2.57 strikeout-to-walk ratio in Double-A Arkansas, then posted a 2.25 ERA in 28 innings in the Minor Leagues this year, striking out 30 and walking 12.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Gott, promoted to Triple-A on May 24, "has a back-end-of-a-really-good-bullpen-type arm." He's generously listed at 6-feet tall, but Gott has good sinking action on a fastball he can throw in the mid-90s and has good command of a breaking ball and changeup.

MLB.com ranks him 13th in the Angels' system.

The Angels called him up after sending starter Drew Rucinski back to Triple-A on Friday night.

"It's what I've been working for my whole life," Gott said. "I'm still trying to take it all in. I think after tonight I'll settle in and realize what's going on."
