Angels looking for Lowe to help solidify bullpen

TEMPE, Ariz. -- In an attempt to bolster their bullpen, the Angels signed right-hander Mark Lowe to a Minor League contract on Wednesday.

The 29-year old Lowe was released by the Dodgers on Sunday and had allowed four earned runs in 8 2/3 innings this spring.

"It was a good Spring Training," Lowe said. "I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish, there are just a lot of guys over there, a lot of arms."

Lowe spent the 2012 season with the Rangers, for whom he appeared in 36 games and posted a 3.43 ERA. Angels manager Mike Scioscia believes Lowe still has quality stuff in his arsenal.

"His stuff looks every bit of what he's had the last three or four years," Scioscia said. "He's got a power arm and if he's throwing the ball the way we anticipate, there's no doubt he will have an opportunity to help in the 'pen."

The Angels were slated to get their first look at Lowe on Wednesday during a bullpen session. He will get another glance at some point during the upcoming Freeway Series.

Lowe said he would not object to starting the season in the Minors, although he would obviously like to start with the Major League club.

While Lowe is certainly a late addition, he can help solidify a bullpen that has underperformed for the Angels throughout the Cactus League season.

"I think some of the guys obviously are coming [along] slowly," Scioscia said. "Some of the guys who have been fighting for spots have not shown their best stuff. Some things have not gotten as settled as we would have liked."
