Shoemaker's forearm strain to delay next start

ANAHEIM -- Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker, who has been dealing with a right forearm strain, is unlikely to start on Tuesday when his turn comes up in the rotation, manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday.

"He's feeling a little bit better, but it's a slow process with him," Scioscia said.

Shoemaker has received treatment on his forearm, which he had wrapped in the locker room before Sunday's series finale against the Mariners.

On Saturday, Shoemaker had said that he planned to throw his normal between-starts bullpen session on Sunday, then hopefully start Tuesday. But Scioscia said Sunday morning that no session was scheduled for Shoemaker.

Nick Tropeano would normally start in Shoemaker's place -- he has made multiple spot starts for the Angels this season. But with recent injuries to both closer Huston Street and setup man Joe Smith, Scioscia said the Angels might have to use Tropeano out of their shorthanded bullpen in the coming days. In that case, the Angels would need to find another option for Tuesday's game against the A's.

When Shoemaker's forearm feels good enough for him to return to the mound, Scioscia said, he would also get consideration as a relief option.
