ANAHEIM -- The Angels' rotation suffered another blow Saturday as the team announced that starter Matthew Shoemaker has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 15, with a strain in his right forearm extensor.
Los Angeles also announced several corresponding moves Saturday. Reliever Cam Bedrosian was reinstated from the disabled list, where he had been since April 22 with a right groin strain. Right-hander Daniel Wright was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake to clear a spot for Bedrosian, while fellow right-hander Parker Bridwell was recalled from Salt Lake to the Angels' Major League roster.
Shoemaker exited in the fourth inning of his most recent start Wednesday against the Yankees with tightness in his forearm. The righty told reporters that night that team doctors had informed him it was better to feel tightness in the extensor muscle, which is on top of the forearm, because it's less likely to be tied to an elbow injury.
"In the second, third, fourth innings, I just felt some tightness on some pitches," Shoemaker said after leaving the game Wednesday. "I don't know what [the velocity] was, but I knew my fastball was coming out different. I could tell."
Shoemaker underwent therapy treatment Saturday. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the club decided to place Shoemaker on the DL because he was unlikely to make his next scheduled start Tuesday, and wanted to ensure he didn't make a premature return.
"We want to make sure he has enough time to calm down," Scioscia said. "Push him back a little bit, and make sure he's 100 percent before he gets out there."
The Angels' starter for Tuesday is to be determined in Shoemaker's absence. Scioscia confirmed that Bridwell, who made his first career Major League start May 30, is a candidate. He added that where recent free-agent signee Doug Fister's next start will be has yet to be determined after the right-hander pitched five innings with Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.
Shoemaker, 30, has a 6-3 record and 4.52 ERA in 14 starts this season. He joins fellow starters Andrew Heaney, Garrett Richards, Tyler Skaggs and Nick Tropeano on the disabled list.
Meanwhile, Bedrosian's reinstatement is welcome news to an Angels bullpen that has posted a 2.28 ERA (11 runs allowed over 43 1/3 innings) over its last 12 games entering Saturday. The group has allowed just 19.8 percent of inherited runners to score, which ranks tops in the American League and second in the Major Leagues.
Five Angels relievers had sub-3.00 ERA before Saturday's game.
"These guys have really been holding up well on their end of it, when they get the opportunities," Scioscia said. "Adding one more arm down there that we feel can pitch at the back end will take some pressure off some guys. And hopefully, with some of the off-days that are projected within the next month, that's going to help, too, because these guys have pitched a lot."
