The Angels, who climbed back to .500 with a 38-38 mark, finished 4-2 against the Yankees this year, securing the season series for the first time since 2008. The Yankees (39-31) sit just percentage points ahead of the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.
New York lost for the eighth time in nine games despite Judge's three-run shot off , highlighting a four-run second inning. squandered that 5-1 lead, charged with six runs (five earned) and eight hits over six-plus innings as he lost for the first time since May 1.
"They gave me a good lead. I couldn't hold on to the lead," Severino said. "I was missing a lot of pitches and threw some pitches that were hit pretty hard. That's frustrating."

"I was watching [Castro] talk to his guys, and he said it took a funny hop on him, so he wasn't able to make the play," Maybin said. "But hey, that's the way the ball bounces sometimes. We'll take it. It was big."
After surrendered a game-tying sac fly to Calhoun, Betances entered but couldn't retire Pujols, who finished the night 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Not done yet: New York appeared to be in the driver's seat after Judge's 425-foot homer landed on the netting covering Monument Park in the second inning, but Severino proved to be touchable. In the third, Cliff Pennington reached base for the first of three times and scored when Pujols' flare dropped in front of Judge, and Escobar followed with another soft hit that trimmed the Yanks' lead to two runs.

"There were times when [Severino] was really good in certain innings and times where he struggled in different innings," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I noticed early his fastball was up a little bit tonight. He would seem to get it going, and then he'd lose it again. It was just some inconsistency in him."
