NEW YORK -- delivered a tiebreaking single as the Angels took advantage of a sloppy exhibition by the Yankees' defense, overcoming 's Major League-leading 25th homer with nine unanswered runs in a 10-5 victory on Thursday evening at Yankee Stadium.
Yankees second baseman flubbed 's potential double-play ball to set up a four-run Angels seventh. lifted a sac fly before Maybin stole second, advancing on an errant throw by catcher . Pujols then rifled a fastball into right field for the go-ahead knock.
"We just continue to come in with that fighter's mentality," Maybin said. "Sometimes you get knocked down, but we don't get knocked out very much."

The Angels, who climbed back to .500 with a 38-38 mark, finished 4-2 against the Yankees this year, securing the season series for the first time since 2008. The Yankees (39-31) sit just percentage points ahead of the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.

"They gave me a good lead. I couldn't hold on to the lead," Severino said. "I was missing a lot of pitches and threw some pitches that were hit pretty hard. That's frustrating."

Maybin hit a leadoff home run, Pujols and flared RBI singles in the third inning, and added a run-scoring hit in the sixth. Castro and drove in runs for the Yankees, who were held hitless from the fourth inning until the ninth.

, , and combined to pitch five scoreless innings in relief of Chavez. Petit picked up the win after working two spotless frames.
"Those guys have been terrific," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ".500 is nothing to throw a parade about, but I don't think we're even .500 without the job our 'pen has done."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Hitter's best friend: The Angels caught a break in the seventh when Maybin's 102.9-mph ground ball scooted past Castro; instead of being on the wrong end of a twin killing, the Angels had runners at the corners and none out.

Tough time for D extends Yanks' tough stretch
"I was watching [Castro] talk to his guys, and he said it took a funny hop on him, so he wasn't able to make the play," Maybin said. "But hey, that's the way the ball bounces sometimes. We'll take it. It was big."
After surrendered a game-tying sac fly to Calhoun, Betances entered but couldn't retire Pujols, who finished the night 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Not done yet: New York appeared to be in the driver's seat after Judge's 425-foot homer landed on the netting covering Monument Park in the second inning, but Severino proved to be touchable. In the third, Cliff Pennington reached base for the first of three times and scored when Pujols' flare dropped in front of Judge, and Escobar followed with another soft hit that trimmed the Yanks' lead to two runs.

"There were times when [Severino] was really good in certain innings and times where he struggled in different innings," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I noticed early his fastball was up a little bit tonight. He would seem to get it going, and then he'd lose it again. It was just some inconsistency in him."
