Angels ink veteran McDonald to Minors deal

Known for defensive skills, infielder will have chance to compete at spring camp

ANAHEIM -- The Angels signed slick-fielding infielder John McDonald to a Minor League contract on Thursday, giving the 39-year-old an invitation to Spring Training and presumably a chance to compete for the utility-infield spot.

McDonald, who would earn $850,000 if he makes the team, is a career backup who has spent 15 seasons in the Majors while accumulating just over 1,000 games. He's never been a big threat with the bat -- his career slash line is .235/.274/.327 -- but is a very strong defensive shortstop, with extensive experience at second and third base as well.

The right-handed-hitting McDonald appeared in 51 games for four different organizations last year -- the Pirates, Indians, Phillies and Red Sox -- and batted .116/.197/.174. If he makes the Angels, they'll be his eighth his Major League team.

Andrew Romine, who's out of options, is currently the favorite for the utility-infield spot. With McDonald, the Angels have invited 20 non-roster players to camp.
