Angels take Blake Goins in 12th round

Right-hander Blake Goins' solid season leading up to the Draft had him shooting up draft boards.

He was taken in the 12th round of the First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

His fastball sits in the low 90s and occasionally reaches 94 mph. His best pitch is a slider that features hard, late tilt, and he has shown a good feel for his changeup. He displayed strong command of his pitches at Pearland High School in Texas and with the Columbia Angels select team, and he shows a good feel for pitching.

The main concerns with Goins are that he is 6 feet tall, already filled out and lacks plane on his fastball, leading some to project him more as a reliever at the next level. But his curveball also has some bite to it, and he can be effective by mixing his two-seamer with sharper off-speed stuff.

Goins has committed to the University of Texas and may tough to sign, being that he calls UT his "dream school." Goins tossed a no-hitter in April in Pearland's second-to-last game of the 2013 regular season.
