DETROIT -- Anibal Sanchez's bruised right calf felt good enough Wednesday that manager Brad Ausmus expects him to be able to make his next start. In fact, that next start could be sooner than expected.
Because Sanchez threw just five pitches Tuesday before being hit in the calf by a comebacker, the Tigers will try to move him up in the rotation order to start this weekend in Toronto. Buck Farmer is tentatively scheduled to start Friday's series opener, followed by Chad Bell on Saturday. Sanchez could either start Sunday's series finale or move up earlier.
At the very least, Myles Jaye won't have to fill in for Sanchez. But Jaye, whose 2 1/3 scoreless innings Tuesday earned him his first Major League victory, is still expected to join the Tigers' rotation. Ausmus said he could replace rookie Artie Lewicki, who made his Major League debut Monday.
Ausmus said Lewicki is approaching an innings limit. He has thrown 146 innings between Detroit, Triple-A Toledo and Double-A Erie, up from 89 innings in 2016 and 79 innings in 2015. There's no indication that the Tigers may pitch him out of the bullpen down the stretch.
Iglesias on paternity leave
The tweet from Jose Iglesias showing his newborn son, Alvaro Jose, was a strong hint that the Tigers' shortstop was not going to be in Wednesday's lineup. Sure enough, the Tigers placed him on the paternity leave list.

The move is procedural at this point. Normally, it would free up a roster spot for the Tigers to call up a fill-in for three days. With expanded rosters in September, though, there's no need. The move simply allows Iglesias to leave the team for a few days.
Iglesias went home to Miami to be with his wife for the birth of their second son. While he's expected to rejoin the team on Saturday, that timetable could be impacted by Hurricane Irma, which is scheduled to threaten South Florida beginning with tropical storm force winds late Friday.
Dixon Machado started Wednesday at shortstop and is expected to share starts with Andrew Romine until Iglesias returns.
