Gose apologizes for mistake in center field
Believing there were two outs, Tigers outfielder allowed run to score from second on sac fly
TORONTO -- Anthony Gose owned it. The Tigers' center fielder took responsibility for his fourth-inning gaffe in Saturday's 15-1 loss to the Blue Jays, and he said he apologized to starting pitcher Buck Farmer for the run that resulted.
"I can't go back and change it," Gose said Sunday morning before he took his usual spot in center for Sunday's series finale. "It happened. It was stupid."
Gose admitted the obvious, that he mistakenly thought he had caught the third out of the inning when he ran down Josh Donaldson's drive in right-center field. Ryan Goins tagged up from second on the drive and kept going as Gose pulled up on the warning track and slowly turned around.
"At that point, you feel about as low as you can," Gose said. "There are 50,000 people here, and I'm the only one who doesn't know how many outs there are."
From manager Brad Ausmus' standpoint, the issue appeared to be forgotten. The way the entire game played out made it one he wanted to forget.
"It's gone," Ausmus said of Saturday's loss. "You can't worry about it. Once the first pitch is thrown, it's ancient history. Once the guys start getting ready and they start throwing and stretching, it's in the rearview mirror."
Gose, for his part, was still angry at himself about it.
"Yeah, I'm not happy," Gose said. "I'm the only one running off the field with the ball in my hand."
