Rendon works out at Nationals Park

WASHINGTON -- Nationals manager Matt Williams provided updates on numerous players battling injuries, including third baseman Anthony Rendon and center fielder Denard Span.

Rendon worked out at Nationals Park on Monday, as the Harrisburg Senators had the day off. Rehabbing from a left oblique strain, he will return to Double-A and continue playing in games on Tuesday.

"[His timing is] still a little off," Williams said. "He still feels like he's a touch off. But he's only had a limited number of at-bats, so the more at-bats he has, he's a fairly quick study in that regard because there aren't a whole lot of moving parts and he's short. It comes quickly for him, but it's important for him to get at-bats and keep going with it, and so he'll get more of those in the days to come."

Span injured his right knee while tracking a fly ball last week in Chicago. He remained in that game, but was removed from Sunday's contest after the soreness persisted. He was not in the lineup for Monday's game before it was postponed by rain.

"We're going to give him a day," Williams said. "He came out of the game [Sunday] and had some knee soreness so we'll give him another one to see where he is at. They're working hard on him, treating him. We'll see where he is [Tuesday]."

Doug Fister (forearm) and Sammy Solis (shoulder) both threw short bullpen sessions on Monday for the first time since going on the DL. Around 20-25 pitches each, Williams said both felt good after throwing 20-25 pitches each, and they will continue to build back up to full strength before pitching in simulated games.

Stephen Strasburg was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with neck stiffness. He was scheduled to see team doctors before the game, but after Williams met with reporters.
