Arbitration-eligible Astros all tendered contracts

Though on roster, Corporan remains trade candidate

HOUSTON -- The Astros tendered contracts to all of their arbitration-eligible players on Tuesday night, including catcher Carlos Corporan. They also tendered contracts to designated hitter Chris Carter, shortstop Marwin Gonzalez, outfielder Dexter Fowler, left-hander Tony Sipp, and catchers Jason Castro and Hank Conger.

Corporan was a non-tender candidate because of the Astros' depth behind the plate. They have four catchers on the 40-man roster after acquiring Conger from the Angels last month, but Corporan remains a candidate to be traded.

The 2015 salaries for the players tendered contracts will be determined through the arbitration process.

According to estimates by MLBTraderumors.com, these seven players could cost the Astros $21 million in payroll next year -- $9 million for Fowler, $3.9 million for Castro, $1.5 million for Sipp, $1.1 million for Conger, $3.5 million for Carter, and $1 million each for Corporan and Gonzalez.

Castro has been tied to trade talks with the Tigers and White Sox in recent months, though moving the veteran would leave the Astros void of a front-line catcher. Fowler has also been the subject of trade speculation; FOXSports.com reported on Tuesday that the Blue Jays have had discussions with the Astros about him.

The Astros' payroll, which finished at approximately $50 million last season, is expected to rise by about $20 million, not including the arbitration-eligible players.
