Bloomquist knocks off rust immediately

PHOENIX -- D-backs shortstop Willie Bloomquist did not show any rust from his two-month stint on the disabled list when he went 3-for-4 on Wednesday night.

Bloomquist had been activated earlier in the day after being on the DL since June 27 with broken bones in his left hand.

"Hand feels good," Bloomquist said. "Everything is good. I felt good really from the day they cleared me to start swinging. I haven't had any issues with it, so obviously the rehab we did was good and worked good. I think everyone's opinion on how to handle it was right on."

Bloomquist had been itching to get back on the field for a while and not long after playing in his first rehab game he was already lobbying manager Kirk Gibson.

"Willie has been saying he is ready for a long time," Gibson said.

Judging by the three hits he had Wednesday, he was right.

"I just needed a few at-bats to feel good and I told them I was ready to go," Bloomquist said. "There comes a point in time where you just miss playing. Nobody that's on the DL likes rehabbing or being on the DL."

Gibson said he will try and find playing time for Bloomquist, which could be a challenge given the presence of Cliff Pennington and Didi Gregorius, not to mention possible September callups when the rosters expand on Sept. 1.
