Goldschmidt holds no grudge with Pirates

PHOENIX -- D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt saw his 2014 season end against the Pirates on Aug. 1 when reliever Ernesto Frieri hit him in the left hand with a pitch, fracturing it.

D-backs pitcher Randall Delgado hit outfielder Andrew McCutchen with a pitch the next night, and he would later suffer an injury, though it's not certain whether it was caused by being hit.

Friday night was the first meeting between the two teams since the incidents, and Goldschmidt said that he holds no ill will toward the Pirates. Besides, Frieri is no longer on the Pittsburgh roster.

"I hadn't really thought about it," Goldschmidt said. "I don't imagine anything happening. It's part of the game, so we want to go out there and try to win, and I'm sure they want to do the same. It broke my hand, but it's part of the game. Every team has injuries. You just try to get healthy, and I was able to do that and have kind of forgot about it now."

Manager Chip Hale was not with the D-backs last year, but he said he considers the matter closed.

There have been a number of hit-by-pitches in Major League Baseball that have caused scuffles among teams this season.

"I think this whole hit batsmen deal is becoming an epidemic in baseball," Hale said. "It's too bad. Those balls up around the head area are the ones that are dangerous. You've got to be really careful and really coach your guys the right way. If you're going to pitch in you've got to know how to pitch in down in the zone more."
