Reynolds hopes rehab prevents Tommy John surgery

PHOENIX -- D-backs reliever Matt Reynolds never had arm trouble before, so when his left elbow started feeling achy he did not think much of it.

"I had been getting some treatment on it," Reynolds said. "It felt a little achy and was getting some treatment and felt it was almost out of there, and then it started coming back a little bit."

As it turned out, Reynolds had a slight tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, but opinions from team physician Michael Lee and Dr. James Andrews both told Reynolds that he could try and rehab the elbow rather than have Tommy John surgery.

"From what I understand, it's in a good spot," Reynolds said. "And hopefully I can just wait around, rehab it for a little while and be good as new."

Reynolds said he will continue to rest and strengthen the elbow for four to six weeks.

"Just trying to take it one day at a time," Reynolds said. "Obviously, it wasn't the best news, but it wasn't the worst, either."
