The Blog in which I Argue with Bobby Cox

It is hard for me to argue anything regarding baseball with former Braves manager Bobby Cox. I mean, come on, the man has been around the game since Ty Cobb was just a pup. Me arguing a baseball topic with Cox would be like Luke telling Yoda that there is no such thing as the force. So, you know what, I'm not going to argue with him.

Cox said recently of former Braves and current Washington National Rick Ankiel, the the once-promising pitcher-turned-outfielder had the best outfield arm that Cox has ever seen. Ever. That list, according to Bobby, includes Rocky Colavito, Bill Robinson, and Ellis Valentine. It's quite a statement, but you have to give credit where credit is due. There aren't many guys who have the same kind of arm strength as Ankiel, but if you look at the numbers, it isn't really reflected in the number of assists he has. Since becoming a full-time outfielder in 2007, Ankiel has recorded just 20 assists in four-plus seasons. Let's compare that to two other guys who are well known for their arms.

Adam Jones has, in my opinion, the most impressive outfield arm in the game. In his five-plus seasons, he has recorded 45 assists, including 12 in 2010 and 13 so far in 2011. He has a strong, accurate arm that is deadly throwing from any angle to any base. Some people like to question Jones' range or reading ability, but no one will ever question his arm.

For the last seven seasons, Jeff Francoueur has been viewed as a guy who had a ton of talent but could never figure out a way to have a complete season. He was also viewed as the guy with the single most potent arm in baseball. In his six-plus seasons, Frenchy has thrown out an incredible 93 runners. In fact, he has never failed to record double digit assists in any season. That's a pretty telling stat.

So, perhaps Cox is right. Perhaps Ankiel does have the strongest outfield arm in the league. The real question is, is his the most effective?
