A's Acquire RHP Luke Gregerson from San Diego for OF Seth Smith

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's have acquired right-handed pitcher Luke Gregerson from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Seth Smith, the club announced today.

Gregerson was 6-8 with four saves and a 2.71 ERA in 73 relief appearances with San Diego last year. He held the opposition to a .203 batting average, including .192 against right-handed hitters. First batters faced hit .186 with a .219 on-base percentage, which was seventh lowest in the National League. The 29-year-old right-hander made his Major League debut with San Diego in 2009 and has appeared in at least 60 games for the Padres in each of the last five seasons, compiling a 2.88 ERA in 363 relief appearances. Gregerson ranks second in San Diego history in career relief appearances and third in games pitched. Since 2009, he has the second lowest opponents slugging percentage among ML relievers with 300 or more innings pitched (.318) and the fifth lowest ERA, opponents batting average (.213) and opponents on-base percentage (.280).

Smith batted .253 with eight home runs and 40 RBI in 117 games in his second season with the A's in 2013. His home runs and RBI were his fewest in his five full Major League seasons and his .391 slugging percentage was a career low. The 31-year-old left-handed hitter made 84 of his 97 starts against right-handed pitching. Smith was acquired from Colorado prior to the 2012 season and is a .265 career hitter with 73 home runs and 273 RBI in 729 games in seven seasons with the Rockies and A's.
