A's Agree to Terms with Manager Bob Melvin on Two-Year Contract Extension

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's agreed to terms with manager Bob Melvin on a two-year contract extension through the 2018 season, the club announced today.

Melvin has compiled a 385-339 (.532) record in four-plus seasons since being named interim manager June 9, 2011. The A's have the fifth best record in the American League and eighth best in the majors over that span. Melvin's 385 wins are third most in Oakland history behind Tony La Russa (798) and Art Howe (600). He is 878-847 in 12 seasons overall with Seattle (2003-04), Arizona (2005-09) and the A's (2011-present).

Melvin guided the A's to three consecutive postseason appearances from 2012-14, including back-to-back American League West titles in 2012 and 2013. He earned BBWAA AL Manager of the Year honors in 2012 after the A's became the fifth team in Major League history to win a Pennant or Division after trailing by 13 or more games and the first to come back when trailing by five or more games with fewer than 10 games remaining. After winning the West with a 94-68 record in 2012, the A's improved to 96-66 in 2013 and Melvin became the first manager to lead the A's to consecutive division titles since Tony La Russa won three straight from 1988-90. The A's reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team with an 88-74 record last year.

Melvin guided the A's to a 47-52 (.475) record in 2011 after Oakland started the season 27-36 (.429). The Bay Area native signed a three-year contract through the 2014 season, Sept. 21, 2011 and a two-year extension through 2016, Jan. 14, 2013. He is the 29th manager in franchise history and the 17th in Oakland history.
