Semien's big hit in 11th sends A's to series win
PHOENIX -- Marcus Semien's two-run base hit off D-backs closer Brad Ziegler in the 11th inning lifted the A's to a series-winning, 7-4 victory at Chase Field on Sunday afternoon.
Ziegler recorded two quick outs to begin the inning but surrendered back-to-back singles to Danny Valencia and Stephen Vogt and hit Josh Phegley with a pitch to load the bases for Semien, who singled down the right-field line. Eric Sogard followed with an RBI single.
"That just shows the fight in our team," Vogt said. "We've showed signs of this all year, and I think it was just nice for us to see it in a game that could've swayed the other way like so many of our other games have this year."
Vogt also homered for the A's, his second in as many days and 18th of the season, while David Peralta went deep for the D-backs, who tied the game, 4-4, in the ninth on Peralta's sacrifice fly off lefty Drew Pomeranz. Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte picked up his first Major League victory, pitching two scoreless innings.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
D-backs capitalize: Allen Webster's routine comebacker to Chavez with two outs in the second inning proved to be anything but ordinary. Chavez made an errant throw to first base and the miscue proved costly when the next two Arizona hitters -- Ender Inciarte and Chris Owings -- each drove in a run to give the D-backs a 2-0 lead.

Payback: The A's got on the board in the same way as the D-backs, taking advantage of a two-out miscue in the third -- this one a throwing error from Jake Lamb on Canha's routine grounder that allowed Billy Burns to score all the way from first. Josh Reddick kept the inning going with a game-tying triple.

Peralta on a roll: Arizona's left fielder has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and is hitting .400 with four doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs in his last 21 games. He's also hit safely in 13 of his last 14 home games. Peralta's third-inning home run, his 14th of the season, tied the game at 3. He again tied the game at 4 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. Peralta finished 3-for-4. More >

Hurrying home: Coco Crisp, limited in action much of the season because of various injuries, notably a neck strain that kept him on the disabled list for more than two months, was finally able to put his speed to use in the seventh inning, hustling all the way home from first base on Canha's double to put the A's ahead, 4-3.

BRACHO'S DEBUT
D-backs reliever Silvino Bracho made his big league debut in the ninth inning to become the 27th different pitcher the D-backs have used this season, one shy of the club record of 28 established in 2010. Bracho allowed one hit, walked one batter and struck out one in one inning of work.
He was signed out of Venezuela by scout Marlon Urdaneta in 2010.

SWITCH-PITCHER TAKES PLATE
Venditte was sent to bat for his first career plate appearance in the 11th inning. Venditte, also a switch-batter, hit from the left side and worked a 3-2 count, ultimately getting called out on strikes in an eight-pitch at-bat. More >

WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs: The D-backs will send Robbie Ray to the mound against the Rockies at 5:40 p.m. MST Monday in Denver in search of his first victory since July 7. Ray was charged with six runs in three innings against the Cardinals in his last outing. He allowed one run in six innings against the Rockies on May 6, his only other career start against Colorado.
A's: The A's return to the Bay Area for a nine-game homestand, starting with three games against the Angels. Left-hander Felix Doubront will be on the mound for Monday's 7:05 p.m. PT opener at the Coliseum, exactly one week after he left his last start in Seattle after two innings because of a right foot contusion. He is 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA in three career games (two starts) against the Angels.
