OAKLAND -- A's catcher Josh Phegley has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for synovitis in his right knee, but he is not expected to play again this season, manager Bob Melvin said Saturday.
Phegley has been out of the hospital for several days, having been administered IV antibiotics to treat the synovitis, an inflammatory disease within the membrane that lines the knee joint.
The catcher, who underwent surgery July 5 to remove a cruciate ligament cyst from the same knee, was on the verge of beginning a Minor League rehab assignment before he was sidelined by the infection.
"He's feeling a lot better now, we just don't feel like he's going to be in a position to get him back and playing this year," Melvin said.
Phegley, 28, was limited to 26 games this season, finishing with a .256 average, one home run and 10 RBIs.
The A's will carry on with three catchers on their roster, Stephen Vogt, Bruce Maxwell and Matt McBride.
Worth noting
• Melvin said right-hander Andrew Triggs felt "a little better" one day after exiting his start with back tightness. It's unclear when Triggs when pitch again, but Melvin expects to announce his rotation for the upcoming series against the Angels on Sunday.
• Right-hander Sonny Gray threw out to 105 feet on Saturday, but "until we get him on a mound, it's still kind of uncertain" if he will pitch again this season, Melvin said.
