A's designate Ka'aihue for assignment; Place Carignan on disabled list

RHP Evan Scribner and OF Brandon Moss selected from Triple-A Sacramento

The Oakland A's placed right-handed pitcher Andrew Carignan on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and designated first baseman Kila Ka'aihue for assignment, the club announced today.  To take their spots on the roster, the A's selected right-handed pitcher Evan Scribner and outfielder Brandon Moss from Triple-A Sacramento.

Scribner was 3-0 with a team-leading six saves and a 3.31 ERA in a team-leading 23 relief appearances with Sacramento.  He held the opposition to a .200 batting average, including .149 against right-handed hitters and .271 against left-handers.  The 26-year-old right-hander made his Major League debut with San Diego last year, posting a 7.07 ERA in 10 relief appearances over two stints with the Padres.  Scribner was claimed off waivers by the A's October 25, 2011.  He has 65 career saves, a 2.88 ERA and 374 strikeouts in 312.1 innings in 237 minor league appearances over six seasons.

Moss was batting .286 with 15 home runs and 33 RBI in 51 games with the River Cats.  He is tied for second in the Pacific Coast League and tied for sixth in all of Minor League Baseball in home runs.  The 28-year-old left-handed hitter belted four home runs over his final five games with Sacramento, including his third two-homer game of the season June 3 at Tacoma.  Moss appeared in 14 games in left field, 14 at designated hitter, 13 at first base and 10 in right field.  He made his Major League debut with Boston in 2007 and is a .236 career hitter with 15 home runs and 78 RBI in 249 games in five seasons with the Red Sox (2007-08), Pittsburgh (2008-10) and Philadelphia (2011).  Moss signed a minor league contract with the A's November 19, 2011.

Carignan left the game last night against Texas in the eighth inning after facing three batters.  He was recalled from Sacramento May 27 for his third stint with the A's this year and did not allow a run in four appearances and 3.1 innings.  Carignan has a 4.66 ERA and .242 opponents batting average in 11 appearances overall.

Ka'aihue was on the A's Opening Day Roster and batted .234 with four home runs and 14 RBI in 39 games.  He was batting .154 over his last 16 games after hitting .289 over his first 23 contests.
