BOSTON -- The A's lost a key component of their lineup Wednesday, placing second baseman Jed Lowrie on the disabled list with a bruised right shin.
Lowrie, who fouled a ball off his shin in the seventh inning of Monday's game in Boston, has been one of Oakland's most consistent producers this season, batting .302 with a .341 on-base percentage. His .464 average with runners in scoring position is tops in the American League.
Chris Coghlan will see the most time at second base in place of Lowrie, who was still on crutches when he departed Boston to return home on Wednesday.
"It's a severe contusion," A's manager Bob Melvin said, "and we didn't feel like he was even going to be able to do baseball activity for seven or eight days, so it made sense to put him on the DL and make sure that when we get him back this isn't something he's fighting through and trying to manage while he's playing."
Lowrie, who was hitting .356 over his last 20 games, is eligible to return May 25.
The A's selected the contract of right-hander Zach Neal and recalled Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Nashville for Wednesday's start and also optioned lefty Daniel Coulombe to round out their latest series of roster moves.

• Third baseman Danny Valencia, who reinjured his left hamstring in Monday's game, remained out of the starting lineup Wednesday, as the A's try to rest him through Thursday's off-day.
