MESA, Ariz. -- A's catcher Josh Phegley, already on the outside looking in following Jonathan Lucroy's arrival this week, has been slowed by a pair of broken fingers.
Phegley will be shut down for at least two weeks, according to manager Bob Melvin, after suffering a fracture to both the pinkie and ring fingers on his right throwing hand when he was struck by a foul tip in the ninth inning of Saturday's game against the Mariners.
"We'll see how he responds to it," Melvin said.

When healthy, Phegley has served in a platoon behind the plate for the last three years, first with Stephen Vogt and more recently with Bruce Maxwell. But Lucroy's arrival means Maxwell will be relegated to backup duties, leaving Phegley without a big league job.
Phegley is a .235 hitter in 155 career games with the A's. He has one Minor League option remaining.

Reliever Ryan Dull, on the mend from right shoulder soreness, is slated to throw a 30-pitch live batting practice session on Monday. He will begin the season on the disabled list as he plays catch-up.
Outfielder Matt Joyce is also making progress. Joyce, who hasn't played the outfield in more than two weeks because of right elbow discomfort, will be back out there in a Minor League game on Monday.
Joyce started at DH for the A's on Sunday, hitting a leadoff home run -- his first of the spring.
Luzardo, Ruiz in action
Left-hander Jesus Luzardo, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the organization's No. 2 prospect, was brought over from Minor League camp on Sunday for a start against the White Sox. Limited to 40 pitches, Luzardo went 2 1/3 innings in the A's 14-0 win, allowing two hits with two strikeouts in an impressive display that saw the hard-throwing southpaw reach the upper 90s. He's just 20 years old.
"Great opportunity and I'm thankful for it," Luzardo said. "I came out here, did my routine and felt good. I was throwing all my pitches, keeping the ball down. I felt good overall."
Cuban prospect Norge Ruiz, 24, was also on display, fanning two and allowing just one baserunner in two scoreless innings of work. The A's brought the right-hander aboard in December 2016, giving him a $2 million signing bonus. He ended the 2017 season at Class A-Advanced Stockton.
"Pretty high-profile guy over there, so it's good to get him in a game and see him do his thing," Melvin said. "Fastball's got some pretty good movement to it, maybe some work with his breaking ball, but these guys come over and are really poised in these games. I remember when I was that age, I didn't have any chance to get in a big league game."
