A's lose challenge as base-stealer ruled safe

HOUSTON -- Oakland manager Bob Melvin lost a replay challenge in the fifth inning that led to Houston scoring two runs on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park.

With one out, Robbie Grossman was ruled safe at second on a stolen-base attempt by second-base umpire Jim Joyce. The A's challenged the safe call, feeling that second baseman Eric Sogard had applied the tag on a sliding Grossman before he reached the base.

After the review, the call stood as the A's had lost the challenge.

If Grossman had been ruled out, it went have left the Astros with no runners on base and two outs in the inning. Instead, Enrique Hernandez followed with a run-scoring triple and Jose Altuve drove in Hernandez with a single, giving the Astros a 3-1 lead.
