A's eye reinforcements in Phegley, Lowrie

May 21st, 2016

OAKLAND -- A's catcher Josh Phegley, nursing a strained right knee, is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on Saturday.
Phegley flew to Nashville on Friday and was expected to be in the Sounds' lineup at designated hitter on Saturday, before catching seven innings for them Sunday. The plan is for him to DH again Monday and catch each of the ensuing two days, according to team trainer Nick Paparesta.
That means Phegley will likely rejoin the A's for the start of their next homestand on May 27, barring any setbacks.
Jed Lowrie could also be in Nashville's lineup on Monday for a scheduled one-game rehab stint. The second baseman, on the disabled list with a right shin contusion, was set to run the bases at the Coliseum on Friday, marking the last hurdle before he's cleared for a Minor League game.
The A's anticipate Lowrie to meet them in Seattle on Tuesday and return to their lineup the following day for the series finale against the Mariners.

Worth Noting
The A's are still awaiting a report on Henderson Alvarez's MRI from Dr. James Andrews, who has been out of town attending a conference, but Paparesta said Alvarez "is doing much better."
"His range of motion is very good, his strength is very good, so right now we're just going to treat him symptomatically and hold off on throwing until Andrews has a chance to take a look at that MRI on Monday," he said. "A shoulder fatigue-type thing."
• Right-hander Liam Hendriks (triceps strain) got a cortisone shot in his pitching elbow on Thursday and will subsequently be shut down for several days before trying to play catch again.
• Righty R.J. Alvarez, who underwent minor elbow surgery in March, threw off the mound for the first time since the procedure on Friday, with a catcher in front of the plate. On Sunday, he'll graduate to a normal bullpen session and could be facing hitters by the end of the month.
