A’s Place Pennington on the Disabled List

Recall Sogard from Sacramento

The Oakland A’s placed shortstop Cliff Pennington on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow tendinitis, the club announced today.  To take his spot on the roster, the A’s recalled infielder Eric Sogard from Triple-A Sacramento.

Pennington is batting .197 with three home runs and 16 RBI in 82 games with the A’s.  He has the lowest slugging percentage in the majors (.282) and the second lowest batting average and on-base percentage (.259).  Pennington was 4 for 48 (.083) over his last 17 games.  This is his first career stint on the disabled list.

Sogard joins the A’s for third time this year and is hitting .145 with two home runs and six RBI in 22 games with Oakland.  He was on the A’s Opening Day roster and was batting .136 in 21 games before he was optioned to Sacramento May 21.  Sogard returned June 16 and went 1 for 3 in one game before being sent back to Sacramento again on June 24.  The 26-year old infielder hit safely in 17 of his 18 games following his most recent option, going 29 for 86 (.337) with four home runs and 13 RBI.  Sogard is batting .323 in 36 games overall with the River Cats.
