A's recall Figueroa, Parrino and Weeks; Select Choice from Sacramento
The Oakland A's recalled left-handed pitcher Pedro Figueroa and infielders Andy Parrino and Jemile Weeks and selected outfielder Michael Choice from Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man for Choice, the A's designated catcher Luke Montz for assignment.
Choice batted a career-high .302 with 14 home runs and a career-high 89 RBI in 132 games with Sacramento. He also had career-highs in runs (90), hits (154), doubles (29), walks (69) and on-base percentage (.390). Choice ranks second in the Pacific Coast League in RBI, fourth in hits and runs scored and fifth in walks. He appeared in 55 games in left field, 52 in center field and 10 in right field. The 23-year-old right-handed hitter was the A's first round pick and the 10th selection overall in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. Choice has a .290 batting average, 61 home runs and 255 RBI in 371 games in four seasons as a professional.
Figueroa has spent the entire season at Sacramento where he went 3-4 with two saves and a 4.10 ERA in a career-high 46 games, including one start. He allowed a .252 opponents batting average, including .216 against left-handed hitters and .192 with runners in scoring position. The 27-year-old left-hander made his Major League debut with the A's last year, logging a 3.32 ERA in 19 relief appearances.
Parrino joins the A's for the second time this year as he went 3 for 24 (.125) with a double in nine games during his first stint from April 10 to 24. He spent the balance of the season at Sacramento where he batted a career-low .210 with four home runs and 36 RBI in 108 games. Parrino appeared in 85 games at shortstop, 18 at third base and five at second base.
Weeks has spent the entire season at Sacramento and batted .271 with four home runs and 40 RBI in 130 games. He added 80 walks for a .376 on-base percentage. Weeks ranks second in the Pacific Coast League in walks (80) and runs scored (96) and tied for third in triples (10). The 25-year-old switch hitter appeared in 45 games at second base, 38 at designated hitter, 25 in center field and 23 at shortstop. Weeks made his Major League debut with the A's in 2011 and hit .303 in 97 games before batting .221 in 118 games last year.
Montz hit .179 with a home run and five RBI in 13 games with the A's from May 1 to 30. He was batting .246 with nine home runs and 29 RBI in 33 games with Sacramento before going on the disabled list July 3 with a strained right shoulder.
