The A's recalled catcher Matt McBride from Triple-A Nashville on Friday prior to their series opener against the Rays at Tropicana Field, while optioning right-hander Zach Neal to Triple-A.
McBride was with the big league club for two days in late April, but he did not appear in a game and has yet to make his 2016 debut. The 30-year-old backstop was hitting .175 with one home run in 20 games at Triple-A this season. He spent the last three years with the Rockies, and is a .199 career hitter with four home runs in 72 Major League games.
Neal was initially called up on Wednesday, and he made his Major League debut in relief against the Red Sox. He allowed three runs in three innings in his only appearance.
