A’s Recall RHP Tyson Ross and INF Brandon Hicks from Triple-A Sacramento

RHP Bartolo Colón and OF Collin Cowgill Placed on the 15-Day Disabled List

The Oakland A’s recalled right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross and infielder Brandon Hicks from Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today.  The A’s also placed right-handed pitcher Bartolo Colón on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 18 with a strained right oblique and outfielder Collin Cowgill on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle.

Ross joins the A’s for the third time this year.  He began the season at Sacramento before he was recalled April 17, the first day the A’s needed a fifth starter.  Ross went 2-6 with a 6.51 ERA in nine starts with the A’s before he was optioned back to Sacramento May 31.  He made two starts with the River Cats before he was recalled a second time June 16, starting that day against the Padres.  Ross allowed two runs on one hit and four walks in 6.0 innings and had a no decision in the A’s 6-4 win over San Diego and was optioned back to Sacramento the next day.  He did not pitch following his second option and is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in four Triple-A starts overall.

Hicks was claimed off waivers from Atlanta March 13 and has spent the entire season at Sacramento, batting .272 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI in 65 games.  He homered in four straight games from June 17-21 and went 12 for 28 (.429) with six home runs and 18 RBI over his final eight games.  The 26-year-old right-handed hitter is tied for the Pacific Coast League lead in hit by pitches (7), ranks second in strikeouts (76), fifth in extra base hits (37), tied for sixth in doubles (21), eighth in home runs (13), ninth in runs (49) and 10th in RBI (48) and slugging (.548).  He has appeared in 39 games at shortstop and 28 at second base.

Colón pitched just 2.0 innings in his last start last Sunday against San Diego before leaving with the oblique injury.  He is 6-7 with a 4.22 ERA in 15 starts and is eligible to be reinstated July 3.  Cowgill was batting .368 over his last 17 games after hitting .128 over his first 15 contests.  He is hitting .271 in 32 games overall and is eligible to be reinstated July 8.
