Manaea could rejoin A's rotation next week

June 22nd, 2016

OAKLAND -- Left-hander Sean Manaea is scheduled to make a rehab start with Class A Stockton on Friday and could come off the disabled list and return to the A's rotation by the end of next week.
He'll throw roughly 65 pitches, according to A's manager Bob Melvin, who said he hopes Manaea needs just a single rehab assignment as he recovers from a left forearm strain suffered June 13 against the Rangers.
"He hasn't been out that long," Melvin said. "We talked about a fairly quick assignment off the DL. If he pitches on Friday, it could be as early as five days after that."
Manaea threw a 39-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and said he felt "great." He also completed a light bullpen session on Sunday. The rookie exited his start against the Rangers with a pronator strain and was put on the DL the next day, but an MRI exam revealed no damage to the ligament in the elbow.
Manaea is 2-4 with a 6.02 ERA in nine starts this season. A healthy return would aid a struggling Oakland rotation, which currently does not have a starter listed for Friday against the Angels and entered Tuesday with the second highest ERA (5.18) in the Majors.
Worth noting
• Josh Reddick, recovering from a fractured thumb, played in his first rehab game with Triple-A Nashville on Monday, going 0-for-4. The outfielder is expected to play in four more games with the Sounds, before rejoining the A's in San Francisco on Monday.
