SEATTLE -- Astros center fielder Carlos Gomez is considered day to day after suffering a right hand contusion from a pitch in the fourth inning of Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Mariners at Safeco Field. He was taken for X-rays, which were negative.
"He's doing OK," manager A.J. Hinch said. "His right hand will be pretty sore, but I think we avoided a fracture, which is good. A ball up and in and I wasn't' sure what it was, if it was his arm or his wrist or his hand. He was in a lot of pain, and when we got to first base he couldn't grip anything. We took him out. He got X-rays, but I think we avoided fracture."
Gomez has struggled mightily for the Astros this season and is hitting .197 with two RBIs. He was hitting 4-for-11 in the series against the Mariners after striking out looking in his first at-bat against Hisashi Iwakuma, who also threw the hit-by-pitch.
"It's sore right now," Gomez said. "It's a contusion. It's a day to day thing. ... I think I'll be fine for the first game in Oakland [on Friday]."
