The Houston Astros Community Leaders program has been named a 2016 Mayor's Proud Partner Award winner. The program was acknowledged today at the 32nd Mayor's Proud Partners Luncheon, hosted by Keep Houston Beautiful. Executive Director of the Astros Foundation Twila Carter received the award on behalf of the Houston Astros and the Community Leaders program.
The Astros Community Leaders program, developed by Astros Owner and Chairman Jim Crane, is a partnership between the Astros, several corporate partners and the City of Houston to provide newly renovated baseball and softball fields to Houston-area children. The concept of the program is to provide young athletes with clean, beautiful ballfields on which they can play, to help them develop physically and mentally. Baseball and softball teach young players the importance of teamwork, perseverance and commitment, principles that will serve them not only on the field, but throughout their lives.
Since its inception, the Community Leaders program has renovated 20 ballfields in eight parks and currently serves more than 2,500 children. In addition to year-round maintenance to the ballfields, additional features include player and coaching clinics, complimentary tickets to Astros games, free equipment and uniforms and special visits from Astros players and front office personnel.
Keep Houston Beautiful is the city's leading organization in beautification, litter reduction and recycling education. Originally known as the Houston Clean City Commission, Keep Houston Beautiful was created in 1979 and charged with the task of creating a clean and beautiful city. Keep Houston Beautiful shines a light on the true leaders and projects that help make Houston a cleaner and more beautiful city through the Mayor's Proud Partner Awards.
