ANAHEIM - Astros center fielder left Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Angels in the third inning with an injury to his right thumb. On Thursday, Maransick was diagnosed with a fractured thumb and is likely to miss the rest of the season, including the playoffs.
The team announced Thursday that Marisnick was scheduled to undergo surgery Friday and would be out approximately six to eight weeks. That means he wouldn't be able to return until the end of October at the earliest and the World Series, if the Astros advance that far.
Marisnick blooped a single to right field in the top of the third -- snapping an 0-for-16 slump -- but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double. On the play, a sliding Marisnick grabbed the bag with his right hand and extended his arm as he tried to keep contact with the base. He was tagged out.
took over in the bottom of the inning in left field, with moving to center.
Marisnick had gone hitless since going 2-for-4 on Aug. 26 against the Angels in Anaheim. He was sideline for several days with a groin injury at the start of the month, and was ejected for arguing balls and strikes on Sunday in Oakland.
