Astros prospect Musgrove makes jump to Fresno

BOSTON -- The Astros have promoted pitching prospect Joe Musgrove, ranked No. 8 in the organization by, to Triple-A Fresno, where he will start for the Grizzlies on Friday against Tacoma. He appeared in six games at Double-A Corpus Christi, including four starts, and allowed 19 hits, three walks, one earned run and struck out 30 in 26 1/3 innings.

Musgrove, a 23-year-old right-hander, was named the Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2015 after going 12-1 with a 1.88 ERA and allowing only eight walks while striking out 99 batters combined at three levels -- Class A Quad Cities, Class A Advanced Lancaster and Corpus Christi.

The Astros acquired Musgrove in a July 20, 2012, trade with the Blue Jays, who originally took him with the No. 46 overall pick in the 2011 Draft.

The Astros also promoted hard-throwing left-handed reliever Reymin Guduan to Fresno after he had allowed one earned run and struck out 19 batters in 13 innings at Double-A. The team released left-hander Edwar Cabrera, who was in Major League Spring Training but was scuffling at Triple-A.

Meanwhile, a pair of top prospects are on the disabled list.

Fresno slugger A.J. Reed, ranked as the best first-base prospect in baseball, strained his hamstring running out an infield single in Tuesday's game and was placed on the seven-day disabled list Wednesday. The injury isn't considered serious.

"It was just very minor," Reed told the Fresno Bee. "I just didn't want to make it worse. So just came out of the game.

Right-handed pitcher Riley Ferrell will likely miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery Wednesday to repair an aneurysm in his throwing arm/shoulder area. The team expects a full recovery, but he won't throw a baseball for two months, meaning his season is likely over.

Ferrell, a third-round pick out of TCU last year, had appeared in eight games in relief at Lancaster and had allowed two earned runs, nine hits and two walks while striking out 14 batters in 10 innings.
