Astros recall outfielder Fernando Martinez
Buck placed on Disabled List with right Achilles tendinitis
The Houston Astros have recalled outfielder Fernando Martinez from Triple A Oklahoma City and have placed outfielder Travis Buck on the 15-day Disabled List with right Achilles tendinitis. Buck’s DL stint is backdated to May 29. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow.
Martinez, 23, was hitting .319 (60x188) at Oklahoma City with 14 doubles, eight home runs, 38 RBI and a .374 on-base percentage in 51 games. The left-handed hitting outfielder currently leads the RedHawks in RBI and total bases (100). Martinez, once a top prospect in the Mets organization, was claimed off waivers by Houston on Jan. 11, 2012. He’s played in 47 games in his Major League career, over parts of the last three seasons with the Mets (2009-11).
Buck, 28, has played in 33 games for Houston this season. He currently leads all Major League pinch-hitters with a .538 (7x13) average in that role. The left-handed hitting outfielder was originally signed as a minor league free agent on Nov. 9, 2011, and made the club after hitting .280 (14x50) with five doubles, a home run and four RBI in 20 Spring Training games as a non-roster invitee.
Martinez is in uniform (No. 21) and in the starting lineup in tonight’s game.
