Astros sign C Carlos Corporan to minor league deal

Includes invite to Spring Training

HOUSTON, TX -  The Houston Astros have agreed to terms on a minor league contract with catcher Carlos Corporan, interim General Manager Dave Gottfried announced today. The deal includes an invitation to Spring Training.

Corporan, 27, spent most of the 2011 season with the Astros Major League club, hitting .188 (29x154) in 52 games (46 starts) with 11 RBI. He hit .294 (10x34) with runners in scoring position and .462 (6x13) with runners in scoring position and two outs. Corporan began the season at Triple A Oklahoma City, hitting .250 (20x80) in 22 games before having his contract purchased on June 10.

Corporan, who is the 10th non-roster invite to Spring Training, was outrighted to Triple A on November 16 after clearing waivers. He joined the Astros organization by signing as a minor league free agent on November 10, 2010.  Corporan was originally selected by Milwaukee in the 12th round of the 2003 Draft, playing in the Brewers system from 2003-09 before spending the 2010 season with the Diamondbacks organization playing at Triple A Reno.
