Astros statement on the passing of Dave Bergman

The Astros released the following statement tonight regarding former player Dave Bergman, who passed away earlier today. He was 61 years old:

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dave Bergman. To those that played with him, Dave was known as a leader and great teammate, and for his charitable efforts. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dave's family and many friends throughout the game and beyond."

Bergman played four of his 17 Major League seasons with the Astros from 1978-81 and appeared in four games for the Astros in the 1980 National League Championship Series. Bergman would spend the majority of his career with the Detroit Tigers (1985-92) where he was a member of their World Series Championship club in 1984.

"Everybody loved Dave," said Enos Cabell, who played with Bergman on three different clubs (Houston, Detroit and San Francisco). "He was a longtime friend and a great, great guy. We served together on the Board of the Joe Niekro Foundation. He cared about people. You won't find anyone with anything bad to say about Dave. He was that type of person." Cabell currently works for the Astros as a special assistant to the general manager.
