NEW YORK -- Astros first baseman Tyler White had a big league debut he won't soon forget.
White, a former 33rd-round Draft pick who was a long shot to make the club in the spring, had a pinch-hit single in his first plate appearance in the seventh inning of Houston's 5-3 season-opening win over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. He was then hit by a pitch in the eighth.

White, who left 39 tickets for friends and family members, was taken for X-rays on his right ring finger -- which manager A.J. Hinch said were negative -- after he was struck by the first career pitch thrown by Yankees reliever Johnny Barbato. That did little to damper White's memorable game.

"It was awesome. It was great," said White, ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the Astros' No. 13 prospect. "Just felt it off the bat. You can obviously feel if you make good contact or not. I was just excited to make good contact, and then seeing it going up the middle, it was a good moment."
When White reached first, a loud cheer could be heard from the group of Astros fans sitting in the second deck above third base. He called it a "surreal moment."
"I'm just trying to do what I can do to make the team better and having a good time coming out here playing baseball," he said.
White said most of his family and friends had originally planned on leaving Tuesday, which was originally scheduled to be an off-day before Monday's game was postponed and pushed back a day.
"Luckily they got to stay and watch the game," he said. "Just an awesome moment them being up there and getting to see it."
White, who led the team with 18 hits in 22 games this spring, is expected to make his first career start at first base on Wednesday.
