HOUSTON -- The Astros placed right-handed reliever Will Harris on the 10-day disabled list on Friday (retroactive to Tuesday) with inflammation in his right shoulder. A corresponding roster move will be announced prior to Saturday's game.
Harris, who hadn't pitched since July 5 in Atlanta, said he's been dealing with discomfort for a couple of weeks. Earlier in the week, he underwent an MRI, which revealed the shoulder is structurally sound. The injury isn't considered serious.
"I've been treating it pretty aggressively the past week or so," Harris said. "It just didn't get to where we were comfortable with it. We'll take a few days and see how I respond to some rest and keep getting the treatment I've been getting. It shouldn't be a lengthy period of time."
If all goes well, Harris could return to action next week at Baltimore.
"Every pitcher goes through shoulder discomfort here and there," he said. "It's not something I'm accustomed to. This time it seemed to be a little more painful getting loose and stuff like that. [I've] had all the support from the training staff and coaching staff, and they said, 'Why don't you sit back and take a break for a few days and let it calm down instead of pushing through it and causing more damage?' Everything looks good, all my medicals and stuff like that. It's just a matter of getting it calmed down."
Harris has been one of the Astros' more reliable relievers over the last three seasons, and last season was on the American League All-Star team. He's appeared in 34 games this year and is 2-2 with two saves and a 2.86 ERA.
"It's tough going on the DL; I've never been on the DL in my Major League career," he said. "It's a little bit of a different feeling coming to the park tomorrow knowing I'm not going to have a chance to pitch, but it's for the best. If I go out there and hurt myself, I'll hurt the team a lot worse than taking a few days."
